Manchester United transfer news RECAP (2023)

Manchester United will face Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday night. United posted a fourth successive Premier League win for the first time since April 2021 with a victory over the table-topping Gunners, meaning confidence remains high in the camp ahead of the start of the group stage fixtures later this week.

United missed out on qualification for the Champions League this season, meaning a good Europa League campaign could result in them returning to Europe's premier club competition next season.

The Reds, who reached the final of the Europa League last year, losing to Villarreal on penalties at the end of the 2020/21 campaign, will be confident of making a winning start to their group stage schedule when they face Real Sociedad on Thursday night.

The win over Arsenal highlighted the progress that they are making under Erik ten Hag and they will be keen to keep that going.

United's Brazilian duo are ready for Real Sociedad

Casemiro could be set to start his first game for United on Thursday night as they kick-off this season's Europa League campaign.

The former Real Madrid man has only featured off the bench so far in all three of his appearances for the club so far.

Ten Hag will be looking to give game time to as many players as possible against Real Sociedad - as both Antony and Casemiro eye-up a place in the Dutchman's starting XI to help them settle into life at the club as quickly as possible.

Lisandro Martinez's exceptional aerial record

Much was made of the Argentinian defender's height when he joined United this summer.

Standing at 5ft 9in, he is the shortest centre-back at the club, and in the entire Premier League.

Yet United's player of the month for August has a phenomenal aerial record that may just leave some pundits and rival fans with egg on their face.

Christian Eriksen doesn't mind the level of competition at United

They say that a little bit of healthy competition at a football club is a good thing.

Eriksen has started every single Premier League game under Erik ten Hag, making a fine start to the season for United so far.

The Dane does not mind the competition that those on the subs bench are providing, describing it as a "good and a strong push" that makes the players fight for their spot.

Thursday night's Europa League match against Real Sociedad should see how strong the level of competition really is, as Ten Hag will no doubt make changes to let those on the fringes get their chance to impress.

It is a very ruthless club, Chelsea. I'm not exactly sure he is the exact fit. Maybe Chelsea are saying they want to do things differently in the future in terms of having a coach in charge [rather] than a manager.

Why Phil Jones and Brandon Williams are out of Europa League squad

Erik ten Hag cut Phil Jones and Brandon Williams from his Europa League squad due to their prolonged recovery timescales from injury.

The two defenders were excluded from United's 25-man squad and although Williams is a locally-trained player he no longer qualifies for Uefa's 'B list' as he was born before September 1 2001.

Jones, 30, has not trained with United since players returned for pre-season training on June 27 and Williams, 22, sustained an unspecified injury in early July that has prevented him from figuring under the new United manager.

United face Real Sociedad tomorrow night but could be without a host of players for the match.
